The Digestive System
What happens to food when you eat it?
What is Digestion?
*When food or drink is broken down into molecule so that your body can absorb the nutrients*
4 Stages of Digestion |
Ingestion:Is when you consume food and your body is preparing it for digestion using saliva.
Digestion:This happens in the stomach where all of the stomach acid mix up the food and break it down into chyme. (Smaller pieces so it can pass through the absorption phase easily)
Absorbtion:In the small intestine the food also known as the bolus is breaking down even further and the tiny villi take all of the nutrients out of the food. When the bolus reaches the large intestine the remaining water is absorbed.
Elimination:In this stage of the digestion process, your body relieves itself of the left over and non-usable materials that your body could not take in. Also known as poop.

parts of the digestive systemThe Main Organs:
Mouth Pharynx Esophagus Stomach Small Intestine Large Intestine |
Accessory Organs:
Teeth Tongue Gallbladder Salivary Glands Liver Pancreas |
Proteins:These are huge molecules that have to be digested by enzymes so that they can be used to repair your body tissue, cell walls other parts of the cell.
|
Fats:Fats have are a very rich source in which your body gains energy. After digestion they are carried through tiny vessels to the chest and then the blood carries them all over your body.
|
Vitamins:There are two different types of vitamins, water-soluble and fat-soluble. Water-soluble vitamins, like the B vitamins and vitamin C are not easily stored throughout the body and usually are flushed out of the body withother remains. Fat-solubles on the other hand are stored in the liver and fattytissues. There are vitamins A, D, E and K.
|
Water and Salt:Most of the material that goes through your small intestine is water with dissolved salt. These are the remains of the previous foods and drinks that are basically the juices secreted by all of the other digestive glands.
